ELECTION LAW IN INDIA : ANALYSIS
It would not be wrong to say
that the principle of elections originated from the Vedas. Both Rigveda and
Atharvaveda mention the House and the Committee. In the Mahabharata, there was
a gathering of common people called Sansad, also known as Jan Sadan, at the
Shanti Parva. Democracy was also prevalent in the Buddhist period, Licchavi,
Vaishali, Malak, Madak, Kamboj, etc. are instances of the democratic system of
Vedic era. Vishal, the first king of Vaishali, was elected through elections.
